Calculation method & assumptions

How it is calculated: Years until retirement = desired retirement age − current age. Monthly income at retirement = desired monthly income × 1.025years until retirement. Financial Independence Number = inflation-adjusted monthly income × 12 ÷ 0.055. The savings goal is rounded up to the next dollar; displayed income amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Assumptions: Inflation is modeled at a fixed 2.5% per year. The 5.5% rate is an assumed annual withdrawal from the savings balance at retirement; it is not an investment return or a guarantee that savings will last. The monthly investment estimate starts with no existing savings and assumes a fixed 10.5% annual return modeled at 0.875% per month, with equal contributions at month-end until retirement. It is rounded up to the next dollar and targets the rounded Financial Independence Number. The “On track to” balance applies the same growth assumption to your current monthly contributions in Step 4. The savings difference compares that projection with your Financial Independence Number. The monthly contribution difference compares your current monthly contribution with the rounded-up monthly investment target. Shortfalls and surpluses are labeled separately. Assumed investment returns are not guaranteed. If retirement starts now, the full savings target is needed immediately. Taxes, fees, other income sources, later inflation, market fluctuations, and retirement duration are not modeled.
